Couteges (Costoja)

A former border village between France and Spain in the Pyrenees, approximately 45 km from Figueres. The village is dominated by the church from the XI / XII century. The last minister living in the village officiated until 1940.
At the end of the civil war the republicans fled over the Pyrenees to France. Costoja was their first stopping place in France. On some days 50,000 republicans arrived in Costoja.
In the small cemetery rest a large number of those who died during and immediately after the civil war.

Costojo's picturesque small narrow lanes and old buildings have been restored in recent years,

and the place has attracted new settlers

There is a post office and a city hall.

To visit Costoja, drive north from Figueres toward La Jonquera. Turn to Maçanet de Cabrenys, and continue through Darnius and eventually passing through Tapis to Costoja. There is a bar and grocer's shop. The route along the Pyrenees makes the trip all the more enjoyable.
